Cockroach Allergy
- Cockroach allergens have been shown to be a major factor in asthma in
children from urban centres[1],
[2]and low cost housing in cities[3].
- Exposure to cockroach allergen in the home is associated with the development of asthma[4]
- cockroach allergen in the home has been shown to be correlated with a decline in FEV1[5]
- Cockroach allergen can be detected in significant quantities in some schools[6],[7].
- Elimination of cockroach allergens is difficult and at least one study failed to show improvement of cockroach allergen levels after intervention in
inner city homes[8]. Other studies were slightly more optimistic and found cockroach allergen levels can be reduced by regular extermination and frequent vacuuming,[9],[10],
[11].
